Heart Pompom
Valentine’s Day is around the corner!! Good old times when I was a student, I got candies from my classmates. In Japan, Valentine’s Day tradition is bit different. It’s usually a girl that gives chocolates to a boy she has a crush on, and that chocolate is called “Honmei Choco (Favorite Chocolate). Girls give chocolates to guy friends and that’s called “Giri Choco (Obligation Chocolate)” meaning she’s giving it as a friend. Now there is such thing called “Tomo Choco (Friend Chocolate)” meaning friends give chocolate to each other. For those who received “Honmei Choco”, he returns some kind of gift on a day called “White Day” which is on March 14th. It’s interesting how some cultures celebrate same holiday differently than other cultures. Anyways, so for Valentines, I thought it would be cute to make heart pompom! You can use it for beanie, scarf, and more.
I was inspired by Couturier Felissimo ‘s flower pompom I saw on Instagram. I thought if pompom maker can do flowers, I knew it can make heart shape too! It took me couple trials and errors, and I’m happy it worked out!!
I hope everyone enjoy making them!
Materials:
- Clover pompom maker (I used smaller one from Large set)
- 2 different color yarns
- Scissors
Notes:
- If you want your heart to be clearly noticeble, I recommend using lightweight yarn (fine or light weight) so that your pompom will be tighter (but doesn’t give that fluffy look like medium weight or higher would give though) Yarn I used in these photos are medium weight #4/ worsted yarn. If you squish pompom, you have to reshape it so you can see a heart…
Instructions:
1. Imagine dividing the arch into 3. Start your 1st color (outer color) from the tab. Wrap around Part 1 twice and yarn finish on tab side.

2. Start your 2nd color (heart color) from 2/3 of the arch. Wrap roughly around Part 2 and overlap about 1/5 of 1st color with 2nd color.
3. Imagine dividing Part 2 (including overlap part) into 5 parts. Wrap gradually where “2” being wrapped the most, “1” & “3” next, “4” then “5” being least wrapped.
4. After you’re done wrapping Part 2, cut the 2nd color yarn and wrap Part 3 and rest of 1 and cover Part 2 with 1st color just like you would wrap regularly. End yarn will be at tab side. Do not cut the yarn.
5. Close the arch and wrap other half.

6. Repeat 1-4 (Do only Step 4 if you want heart on only 1 side)
7. Cut the yarn from the middle (insert your scissors between slit opening)
A view after you cut from middle. You can already see a heart!
8. Cut a long piece of yarn and wrap it through the middle. Make sure to tie it tightly! Remove the arches and trim your pompom to desired size.
Making the heart with multiple colors would look cute too!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
