Bernat Blanket BIG IS LITERALLY BIG

Couple months ago, I went to Michaels to purchase yarns for Sidewalk Shawl I made for my mom’s birthday. I had no intention to buy anything else but the yarns I was looking for, but then…from side of my eyes, I saw this big ball of yarn! It looked new yarns that recently came out, so I went over to the shelf and I saw that it was thicker yarn of Bernat Blanket Yarn!! I already had couple project ideas with other yarns, but I couldn’t really think of what I wanted to make with this big, bulky, fluffy yarn. I could’ve come back to the store to buy them, but they were on sale so I was debating so hard whether I should buy them or not.

I ended up buying 3 balls that day…with no projects planned 😅

While I was working on other projects, I was thinking what I should make with this yarn. At first, I was thinking of new floor rug for my room because the one in my room now is getting dirty. So I tried couple stitches, but I didn’t like it so I put aside again. Later when I finished one of my project, I picked up the yarn and big hook again. I was like…why not just give it a try and make couple rows? I gave it a shot and tried with half double crochet (hdc). It looked pretty thick, and I actually liked it!

Once I figured out which stitch I’m going to use and what I’m going to make (which ended up being a rug), I started crocheting! Overall I decided to make 25-stitches long with 3 rows of hdc per each color.

I actually re-did this rug 3,4 times…one big reason was I crocheted too tight that as it got longer (maybe about 2/3 done) I kind of noticed it was getting skinnier. My mom comes in to the room and she said “Tae-chan, what happened at the top? It’s skinny. Are you going to fix it?” Right when she said that, I thought for a moment and decided to start from scratch. My sister helped with winding all the yarns (thank you, sis!) and it was actually cool to see how much yarn I had.

Colors I bought were Blue Sky, Vintage White and Pale Gray. Because first color would need extra length for foundation chain, I couldn’t finish 3 rows with 1 skein 😱 I had maybe 1 or 2 stitches left to complete the row. From next color, I was able to complete 3 rows with 1 skein 👍

In total, I ended up buying 10 skeins. Each skein is $9.99 on regular price, but I bought all of them with coupons so I think I was able to save around $30~$40.
One important thing: this yarn is NOT available at Yarnspirations or any other website that I researched! Only available at Michaels in-store! (Update: 07/12/2017 Michaels sell these on online as well now!) I tried to find patterns at Yarnspirations, but nothing! Currently only free (or paid) patterns available are on the labels of each skein or other blogs! You can find my rug pattern RIGHT HERE!

Happy crochet!
